I recently attended my first virtual networking event and had an unexpected breakthrough.
The event was unique—not only was it online, but the organizers integrated mindfulness and movement practices into the experience.
So shortly after the event kicked off, a dance instructor came on screen.
She asked us all to stand up and make space around ourselves.
She was smiling from ear to ear with a huge white sweater that said "LOVE" across the front of it. She told us that we were going to dance ourselves into the present moment.
Then, she hit play and the music started pulsing.
She leaned in towards her computer's selfie camera and said, "But I don't want you to have fun."
"In fact. You CAN'T have fun," she made it clear.
She was still smiling. She stared into the camera without saying anything for a while.
What was she getting at?, I wondered.
She reached into the pockets of her shorts and pulled out her empty hands. She looked all around and then back into the camera. She held out her open hands for us all to see.
Then she said, "You can't have fun. Because it doesn't exist outside of you. If you keep looking for it, you're never going to find it... You have to BE fun."
Boom!
I felt my heart skip a beat.
I was hit with the Truth.
Moments before, while this woman was introducing the activity, I was thinking to myself, "Oh no. This is going to be awkward."
Her reminder to BE fun invited me to transform my attitude.
A second later I was free. I freed myself.
I was dancing. I was smiling. I was Fun.
Can you relate to this?
Are there areas of your life where your attitude might be limiting you?
Are there things you do that aren't fun/enjoyable/easy because you've decided they can't be?
